@AndysLanguageBlog no they get famous by spending hundreds of millions of dollars on promotion. Some like, most I have heard from don't.

@gruntnick My channel, I say what I like. You are free to visit or not. My son bought and used RS for Japanese. I went over it with him. I also had a presentation by a salesman for RS. Now where is the shame or shamelessness in saying what I think on my own youtube channel?

Then I found two great websites - iknow.jp and lingq.com - though I'm still a "romaji" user on the first one so far and only tried out Lingq. Both are amazing tools. Now it's really time for me to find out how to force my keyboard typing hiragana/katakana... I had some installation option on WindowsXP, but have no idea how to get it on Windows7? :/

Rosetta Stone + Pimsleur were my very first steps into Japanese. RS is like a good game: involving, entertaining. Pimsleur is of great value for me because of perfect recording quality, clear pronunciation, and because I can use it on my long walks. For repeating - I cut out all the EN text in mp3 editor to get 5-10 min versions instead of 30, because full length gets too slow, too monotonous. Then I listen short versions over and over again until all it sounds like a music tune in my head :-)

PS
I recently joined LingQ and it is an incredibly effective resource! For the last several years I've been studying seven-nine languages but limited success due to conventional learning methods. I'm sooo excited to be finally making progress! LingQ even has svenska and suomi... can't say how happy I was to find those.

I have used Rosetta Stone, levels 1-3 in French and Hindi.
The only way in which these courses have helped me is in pronunciation; I can pronounce French and Hindi without an accent. However, they do NOT teach you how to speak the languages. After using these programs over many months I only remember approximately 50-100 phrases. Rosetta Stone really doesn't allow you to gain much literacy or fluency. Many polyglots seem to agree that Assimil is the best course.

@lingosteve Yes it is true that there is little vocabulary but you see for someone like me has been "collecting" so to speak German vocabulary since I was 8 I just needed grammar this is what Michel Thomas gave me. I also found it fun and engaging . However there is no one approach that works for everyone I think though that everyone should try it it is a free app on the ipod. As far as I am concerned tho rossetta stone is pretty overpriced and there are cheaper and better ones out there.
you should review Michel Thomas method best method I have found so far very much revolutionary Michel was a pure genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@GriffenJC I could never figure out why he is so popular, but he is. I have listened to him and lose focus. Too much English and too little vocabulary.

Shameless promotion for your family owned business by knocking another style of learning without even trying it.

@gruntnick Why shameless?

@lingosteve I mean what should I be ashamed of. I am not ashamed of LingQ and not ashamed of the fact that I have sat through Rosetta Stone presentations and have watched my son use and am not impressed.
