Israel Approves Detention Center for African Migrants

JERUSALEM — Israel's Cabinet voted Sunday to erect a massive detention facility to hold thousands of Africans who have slipped illegally through the porous southern border with Egypt, heating up a debate over how to handle their mounting numbers.
Critics accuse Israel of trying to turn away bona fide refugees and predicted the facility, which will be designed to hold up to 10,000 detainees, would become a squalid refugee camp. The Cabinet minister in charge of prisons said correctional authorities were ill-equipped to run the facility.........

In recent years, tens of thousands of Africans like Abdul-Rasul have entered the country through its long desert border with Egypt, turning Israel, like parts of Europe, into a magnet for asylum seekers, and even more, for migrants desperate for jobs in the industrialized world.

Their arrivals are hardly being welcomed. Facing a public furor, the government is scrambling to erect a fence along the 130-mile (220-kilometer) Egyptian border and a massive detention center in the remote southern desert......

I don't think you can understand this situation from an American perspective. Race relations in Israel are not like the ones here. Israel accepts some African asylum seekers from countries in trouble, but many more try to enter Israel because it's a relatively stable country in the region. It is not because they're Black (which is your American perspective) it is because there are too many of them for Israel to absorb.

Thank you for your comment. Why have Israeli health officials been sterilizing young Ethiopian girls there in the state of Israel? I'm sure some within the state of Israel are not racists but there are many who are and they do exist and act within government.

@AfriSynergy I've known Israelis and two Ethiopian Jews personally, and I think you need to reexamine this. A quick search on Ethiopian Jews and sterilization leads to white power websites trying to run a smear campaign. You are talking about the drug Depo-Provera, which is birth control offered to people in Israel. Israel has universal health care, so probably at a doctor visit. It doesn't make sense that Israel would bring these lost Jews to the country to sterilize them fifteen years later.

Even White Power websites provide some truth. Aside from that, I have already done the research and reported on the sterilization on Ethiopian women in the state of Israel. There have been many who stated that it didn't make sense that America would intentionally infect some of its own blacks and then Guatemalan women with STD but it did occur. The Israelis did this to Ethiopian women but weren't doing it to white women. Remember their race-specific weapon in 2000?

@AfriSynergy Also continuing from my first comment... The only question about Ethiopian Jews in Israel is if they are converts or not. Recently a rabbi ruled that a Kohen (a type of Jew with restrictions on marrying widows and converts) could marry his Ethiopian girlfriend because they are not considered converts, but rather as full Jews.

@AnticDispossession: After looking at the inhumane and horrible treatment of the Palestinians by the Zionist Nazi Government of Israel, one can come to only one conclusion that Israel is a heartless, blood thirsty and hateful nation. @AfriSynergy Since you seem proud to be Black, consider that suspicion and hatred of Jews is historical and recurring in Europe, going back to when Judea revolted against Rome. @AfriSynergy But I just gave you an example of open acceptance, in this case in very religious circles. I am trying to say many are willing to fight racism. Really, Israel is different from America concerning race. Judaism as a religion is blind to color. Concerning your insistence that they sterilize, I still don't see why they would fly 100,000 people from Ethiopia and set up residences and programs for them to become Israelis, only to go back on that.

@AfriSynergy And a third comment... Also know that Russians are treated suspiciously in Israel. If you could prove you had a grandparent in the Jewish tradition you would get an easier immigration process. Some people abused this in order to leave Russia, even though they wanted no connection to Israel. Also more than half of Israelis are brown Jews from the Middle East, rather than coming from the European people of WWII. This is why I'm saying you must understand race in Israel to comment.
