Julie Ireton of CBC Radio Ottawa interviews Harvey Stein, a member of the Steering Committee of Nortel Terminated Canadian Employees on May 14, 2009. There are several reasons these Nortel developments are relevant to the Federal Government and are deserving of closer examination by the House of Commons Standing Committees for Human Resources and Skills Development, for Industry Science and Technology and for Finance: (1) severance not paid ; (2) Public Employment Insurance Fund abused ; (3) conditions on the sale of Nortel's Canadian operations to foreigners to ensure the terminated employees are paid their severance; (4) productive use of Nortel's research tax credits and prior period tax loss carryforwards and (5) government purchase of Nortel facilities with condition of proceeds being used to pay severance to the terminated employees.
