November, 2010 Rep. Akin said that the Pilgrims came here in 1620 to escape socialism. He said they had tried it and knew "it was unBiblical." Check out ThinkProgress for the posting. I hope someone puts it up here.

@iNavi People are bitter because they view the healthcare bill as welfare for blacks, the poor, and hispanics who are lazy and don't want to work. Also, it is viewed as taking money from hard working white people and giving to federally protected minorities. This is why opposition is bringing up states rights, birther movement, and the socialist card against Obama.

You stay classy, Congressman Akin!!!!

There is also a large percentage of the population that believes in Angels.... that does not mean tat Angels empirically exist. In fact, a large portion of the population believes that the medical care in the US is the best in the world and that no citizen enjoys more in life than Americans do. Given that, they are more correct about the Angel thing.... BTW, a 'large percentage' is still not the majority of the population....

I think my fast and loose budget numbers were meant to reflect a general trend in wasteful spending that includes such 'black holes' as NASA, the intelligence budgets and other extracurricular adventures that seem to result in a determent for the citizens. I believe if you include those as part of the 'military budget' my numbers may not seem to far off....
But if you think the Government should be 'starved' which is a Laffer-esque way of 'killing the beast' why even stay?

I don't know your numbers but what you are saying is we spend $1,078,327,000,000 (yes, thats quadrillion) per year on the military. Even if your #'s are not spot on... I am with you we need to spend less on military, less on foreign aid (this includes all money sent overseas) less internally, less, less, less. Its time we showed some sort of a learning curve.

I think Akin's point is being missed. The point is that there is still a large percentage of the population that feels they are capable of taking care of themselves without govt. welfare. It seems like a disingenuous distraction to drift off topic to suggest that there was any implied racial suggestion.

you should search for another plan. Based on your #'s your ins. carrier is making better than 20 - 30% profit. The industry average is 3.3%. As a comparison restaurants make 7.5, network and comm. almost 17, and beverages over 20. I know you work for the ins co. blah blah blah.
just the facts

And under this plan you can keep your own provider . So what is the issue . Just hope you don't get turned down if you get sick and need help like so many others .

Your taxes can pay for healthcare OR another aircraft carrier. We waste more than half our treasure on the military. This is simply unsustainable, and it's the elephant in the room!
I am a black man and I have to say that was so uncomfortable to hear, I felt my spine tingle. Just think I am actually experiencing some of the same exact hatred that my parents endured in the MLK era. I can't believe it's 2009 and this behaviour is increasing instead of getting better. I'm the same species as the people in that room except for the color of my skin. My fellow humans this is what hurts us in our souls and yet we still love you as our brothers and sisters.

I don't know what is worse -- him saying it, or all the "real Americans" in the audience applauding it. There really is nothing more depraved in this world than the GOP.
