Helmet cam video using my VholdR camera. Be sure to watch in high quality mode ("HQ" button on the player window) for best results. The hang glider is a Bright Star Millennium 3-axis rigid wing design. Pilots: Steve Morris and Brian Porter. Sorry I had to use the same music as some of my other videos, YouTube is very restrictive on what music they'll allow.

Marina is a ridge soaring site that has dunes between 0 and 150 feet high. It's an amazing place to fly if you don't mind being very low the entire flight.

  • Livio,

Marina is in Northern California near the city of Monterey. The highest dune is only 150ft. It's best not to even try soaring unless the winds are 15 mph or more. Winds less than 15 mph require expert experience.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • How high does it go? Could you have gone higher? It looks like you were trying to keep that altitude.

  • This is a ridge soaring site and you can only fly as high as the lift band created by the deflected wind against the dunes. Some of the flying is done very low and fast just for fun.

  • So you'd need a thermal to go higher? Are there any so near the sea? How high does that Mill go?

  • Almost no thermals near the ocean because the air is stable and the water is evenly heated. Thermals can take you to the legal altitude limit of 17,999 feet. Many pilots have been this high in the desert and mountain regions of the US. You will need oxygen!

  • Hi,

What aircraft is it???..I dont know the make etc..??

    Great videos btw..

    Laurie

  • The glider is a Bright Star Millennium. First produced in 1999, no longer in production.

    Thanks,

    Steve

  • That is a very cool setup that you have. I have never seen anyone flying a rigid wing from recumbent position with a stick !

  • just like in FSX :)
