@paneuphony , on the other hand, since the timbre of the timpani is so wildly different than that of of the rest of the orchestra, it is able stand out in a way that is different that most other solo instruments. The orchestra is supplying a good deal of the melodic material, while the timpanists are driving the rhythmic and dynamic contour of the ensemble to a greater extent than is usual (or even possible) for other solo instruments.

the thing that makes is hard for me to appreciate the timpani concerto is the piece still mostly uses the orchestra for the melodic passages with the timpani as a highlight. maybe the closest thing to that you would see in another instrument is a piano concerto. I guess I expected the timpani to be even more featured than they are, which may or may not be possible.

@Scribbler29 hehehe... ah, trademarks. I know what you mean. I feel the same way about Vivaldi's music. Most composers wrote 4000 things once... they write this, then they write that, then they write something else. Vivaldi wrote one thing 4000 times... :)
In my humble opinion, there are three things today's popular music needs more of:
Timpanis
Electric Violins
And Talent.

Philip Glass was always a groundbreaker... I think the idea of tympani as solo instruments is still a little difficult for most classical music fans to warm up to, but why not a tympani concerto? It is by nature different than a viola concerto, but so, then, is a bassoon concerto or a piano concerto, or stuff like Bartok's concerto for orchestra. There should be room under our tent for everyone...
