The first tune ever published with "Rag" in the title was this one from 1897 by W.H. Krell. It is a patrol march in structure (i.e., nearly symmetrical in nature with the loudest strain in the middle, thus simulating a marching band approaching and then fading away in the distance).

You can download the sheet music here:

Here it is in an impromptu performance during a ragtime party in at "Skunk Hollow" in Sutter Creek, California, on 1 May 2010.

On the upright piano in the main room is Will Perkins. On the grand piano is Tom Brier. On flute is Julia Riley. On tuba is Robyn Drivon. On drums is Steve Drivon. On oboe is Pepper Rae. On violin is Soleil Rae. On clarinet is Larisa Migachyov. On a third piano in the next room is Monty Suffern. I don't know if anyone was playing the fourth piano that's in another nearby room...

  • You and your friends always has such good taste in music! I search your clips to find music I then search the libraries to get the sheets :) Too sad I live so far from you... Sort of the other side of the globe (Swden). Otherwise I would have visited your meetings.

  • @HotRagEmma Well, there are some ragtime get-togethers in Sweden, I do believe. Look up "Swedish Ragtime Home Page" and get in touch with its webmaster, Oleg Mezjuev. There are some ragtime performers and composers in Sweden.

  • When is the next party? Can't wait!!!!

  • @littlebird480 Well, there will be after-hours jamming here during the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival in three weeks. But there is another all-day/next-day party planned for September. It will be a Tom Brier concert ($20 per person) with the all-night party/jam session to follow, much like how this party followed a Larisa Migachyov concert.

  • It's fun playing along to this particular rag on any instrument because there's SO MUCH you can do with it. I love to play along on clarinet and oboe (when I can get my hands on one), despite the fact I'm a flautist/piccoloist. But it's a fun tune to learn on ANY instrument!!!

  • I learned a simplified version of this tune, it was on a piano book and it was called "cakewalk parade"; actually they were three different '800 tunes, among which there was missisipi rag! Very nice.. ;)

  • That's what it's all about!

excellent job guys n gals, I loved it!

  • I really wished I lived closer, so I could attend one of these >:3

  • Great tune, I'm loving rag-time even more :-)
