It seems like it could be used to skim off particles. They'd be swept to the outside of the vortex while water was allowed to flow down the drain. I'm not sure though. I bet it's getting plenty of aeration though.

@pseudololo: Nope, its just the opposite .... dirt is going down to the middle of the vortex so that it can be drained ... thisway the dirt doesn't go into the filter which comes after the vortex before the water goes back to the pond ... (xcuse my english, it's not my onw language)
