Modern developmental biologists believe that vertebrate embryos pass through a common phylotypic stage. The theory was first promoted by Ernst Haeckel, whose fake drawings were published in biology texts for nearly a century. Current research shows that Haeckel's drawings were made to look as if there were a common phylotypic stage, although there isn't.
