ZHANG:
Moving on to South Korea, top models from 11 Asian countries graced the runway for Asia's biggest modeling awards Thursday in Seoul.

STORY:
Around 20 top models sashayed down the runway of the 2009 Asian Model Awards in Seoul yesterday.

South Korea is hoping to pitch itself as Asia's fashion hub.

[Shin Myun-tag, Organizing Committee Chairman]:
"Each Asian country has models. But if Asian countries gather together and pick out talented models, Asia's fashion industry as a whole can be industrialized."

Famous celebrities in the region were also invited to the event.

Taiwanese actress Chiling Lin, who started her career as a supermodel in Taiwan, received the Asian Star Award.

[Chiling Lin, Taiwanese Actress and Model];
"In terms of the modeling category, yes, I don't think there's much attention drawn to this area. So I'd love to see, in the future, people really treat models as professionals."

South Korea's famous fashion designers also presented various fashion shows to celebrate the awards.

[Kim Da-ul, Sorth Korean Model]:
"There's a rare chance for a model to win an award. Even fashion magazines don't hold this kind of event annually. So it's very nice to have this award with other celebrities."

The annual award show was started in 2006 by a South Korean model institute and the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange.

  • Chiling is very eloquent, and I agree with her comments. It seems to me that modeling in Asia has for the most part steered clear of some of the negative connotations that modeling has taken on in Europe and the Americas. Modeling in Asia appears much more professional, healthful, and graceful than elsewhere in the world, in my opinion.

  • My god, this world has gone crazy.

I happen to be half asian and half white.

What the heck is wrong with either of them?

I mean, I'm against racism, but either way, someone's gonna be hurt. Whether it's you or someone else, someone will.

    So really, calm down.

Racism is something that needs to end. Just because of different looks or dialects, does that mean you have to hate each other?! Seriously. Calm the fuck down.

  • Stupid shit you talk about. Trying to be black? no no no, people that grow from same backgrounds are alike. HIpanics and Black have similar BG, if an asian or white grows up in the ghetto or projects or just with normal city people in L.A or N.Y they will act like that race and culture. You are like a white person thinking we are trying to be something no one is trying to be. Every culture can dance(no whites) every culture has rhythm, etc cut the crap

  • Including you. Welcome to the dumbing down of the world. BTW scientific studies show that if you are brown, you act like an animal.

  • Actually everyones posin and wanting to be like Blacks, specially whites and asians, think of the mainstream music, clothes and way most young people speak, you should think before you be dissin.
