The Motorcycle Diaries - Al Otro Lado Del Rio english lyrics Jorge Drexler
English Subtitles

Ernesto Che Guevara and Alberto Granado`s motorcycle journey through Argentina, Chile, Peru, Colombia, and Venezuela

I drive my oar into the water
I take your arm in mine

I believe that I have seen a light
On the other side of the river.

The day will go strengthening you
Little by little against the cold
I believe that I have seen a light
On the other side of the river.

Above all I believe that
Not all is lost
So many tears, So many tears
And I, I am an empty vessel.

I hear a voice that calls me
Almost a sigh
Row, row, row on
Row, row, row on.

On this shore of the world
What is not taken is available to take
I believe that I have seen a light
On the other side of the river.

Very serious, I go on rowing

Deep inside I am smiling
I believe that I have seen a light
On the other side of the river.

Above all I believe that
Not all is lost
So many tears, So many tears
And I, I am an empty vessel.

I hear a voice that calls me
Almost a sigh
Row, row, row on
Row, row, row on.

I drive my oar into the water
I take your arm in mine
I believe that I have seen a light
On the other side of the river.

The difference between Castro and Guevara is that Guevara remained loyal to an idea, not to a man. That's why Cuba stopped growing after he left... Power has blinded Fidel, a long time ago.

Great Song, in a great movie, and also a valiant attempt to translate the original text.

Ideologies and '...isms' may change fast or endure for long. Some ideals are changed almost as fast as we change socks, then again at the other side of the tracks we may always use the same pair of pants, everyday.

This is the story of the awakening of a persons humanity. Regardless of political affiliation, an story well told. Magnifico.

Che Guevara was Castro's hitman and he choose to die as an animal in Bolivia, because he killed people like a savage. He killed political prisoners in Cuba and Bolivian peasants who didn't want to support him. There is a spanish saying, "Al que hierro mata, a hierro muere" : " He who lives by the sword will die by the sword".

Che was an idealist, he followed what he believed, for sure. but you have to remember that che as a politician would be futile, the country would collapse. Che was just too honest, he would make too many enemies against Cuba. But as a revolutionary leader for rebels, he was the number one :)

Not True. Che instituted a "worker incentive" program that rewarded workers with a merit system, but not an increase in wage. This disenfranchised workers; who wants to work for just a pat on the back? It also made apparent to Castro that some aspects of a free market system had to be in place, albeit highly restrictive in Cuba. Human nature ruins the ideals of Communism, not individual humans. Che was the idealist, Fidel the pragmatist. After the US embargo, Castro declared himself a Marxist.
