Pictures of Beirut from the 60's and the 70's before the war, with the song of Melhem Barakat "sallem 3aleiha ya hawa".

The song's title means "oh wind say good bye to her", and Melhem is a Lebanese composer who debuted his career in the 70's. So I'll let you imagine why I used this combination of song and pictures.

Lyrics in Lebanese and English:

1st paragraph
--------------
Sallem 3aleiha ya hawa
Oh wind send her my salutations
Wa7ki laha albi hawa
And tell her that my hart has fallen (in love)
Kan l'hawa ya7ki ma3i
The wind used to talk to me
Battal y'7akini l'hawa
Now the wind ain't talking anymore

2nd paragraph
--------------
Sallem 3aleiha win7ini
Send her the salutations and take a bow
Birmoush 3ineiha i3tini
And take care of her eyelashes
La tinkor l'madi l'hani
Don't deny the lovely past
Wou ayyam 3ishnaha sawa
And the days we lived together
-------------------------------

As you might have noticed, the word "Hawa" that is repeated several times, has 3 meanings and is used each time with a different meaning (noun: wind or love, or verb in the past: has fallen).

A perfect lebanese song! I hope you enjoy the video. Send me your comments please.

  • it´s still my favoritge country, (the christian part of course)! then Israel ! so very good musik from m.baraket! i wish that once a day he will come to germany! salem, shalom,by, servus, auf wiedersehen, katharina bösebeck

  • @boesebeck1 I think the beauty of lebanon is its cultural heritage. When you go to Beirut, you think you are in Athens while other Lebanese cities don't resemble at all to beirut. You may say they're less beautiful or not, but the most important is the cultural variety that doesn't exist in any other country. Respect and peace to all.
