  • Poor sound quality. But then again, this is recorded 30 years ago - on probably less than top-notch equipment. Still it shows off the true Jaco. "Havona" was his' grand piece! I saw him with WR in 1980 as the one 'n' only. I saw him also in Oslo, Norway with Brian Melvins Night Food in 1985. Period. This is somewhere in between...

As it says in the info-section, this concert took place in 1983.

  • @Musicenthusiasm My comment wasn't about the exact time and date. It was more a notion on Jaco's dwindling genius. It started after he left Weather Report in 1982. Later that year he was diagnosed as bipolar with manic depressions. It's almost stunning to understand this and his ability to stay focused as a musician. His illness escalated severe after his admittion to Bellevue Hospital in New York in 1986, which means that 1983 is somewhat in between...

I'm fully aware of the details you mentioned here and Jaco's life story in general. Jaco's life and music is of great interest to me, as the content of my channel might indicate ;)

  • off pitch

I didn't record this myself, but I know for a fact that this concert was taped with some rather unsophisticated walkman equipment by a person in the audience. When you also add that the recording is almost 30 years old and probably a 2nd or 3rd generation tape, I don't think you should expect the audio quailty to be top shelf. That being said, it is still better than nothing. Right? ;)

  • Saw this ban@ Vanguard and 55Grand at the beginning of Jaco's slide into oblivion...sadly, one of the great artists of jazz ends up sleeping on park benches and grubbing change..I SAW this and it broke my heart. This stuff here is a waste. I've seen dozens of WR shows, this is sad. Once saw J ask Vic Bailey up on stage to jam @55 grand and cut little Vic up into pieces. No one played like Mr.P,NO ONE can! Bird-like in personality, died the same age. A great loss. Miss seeing him, miss his genius

  • @Musicenthusiasm For a walkman type of recording this is dam good . it helps that I am listening to it on a set of Philips studio headphones with the bass slightly enhanced. and Yes, for rare live recording of this brilliant track It is better than nothing !

  • I had thought Jaco never performed this live at all. Great to hear this. Not just a great bassist, but incredible composer too, who knows what other gems could have been unearthed?

  • @Musicenthusiasm Then I don't have to point out Pat Metheny's liner notes in Jaco's debut album (the y2k realease). I find Bill Milkowski's book about Jaco (1995) readable, too - though Metheny states it as sensational. Jaco's early years and the discography is worth a read. The big band connection was highly explanatory. And Milkowski gives multitudes of reasons to why Jaco's music is so beautiful and well orchestrated! You're channel is of great interest, even for a veteran like me...

  • Historic ! Thanks very much.

  • @alexjrmarino beautifully so

  • @Musicenthusiasm Right, I thank you and the recorder for the hard work to be able to appreciate Havona live! I just thought that you tweaked the pitch ,so that YT doesn't take it off because of copyrighted content, but now I realized that it's live so there is no problem. Actually you can try using some program to turn back the original pitch, if you have the time and enthusiasm of course, cheers! :)
