Mohammed Hassate
Since the 1970s, it has become virtually impossible for people from developing countries to get into developed countries without presenting a visa or an official authorization. Before that time, it was very easy for people from all countries to immigrate to European industrial countries or to the U.S because these nations were in need of workers and labor to build their wealth and economies or simply to restore their demographic balance by populating some of their deserted regions. Now, with the saturation of the western labor market, the governments of those countries started to put lots of restrictions on people who want to get into their lands, and after the September 11th attacks and the law against terrorism, things got worse and people who want to travel to some of these countries should be submitted to different kinds of controls and several series of questionings and investigations.
It is true that developed countries are confronted to a daily big deal which is the clandestine immigration and people that are already immigrants but in irregular situation, but that doesn't necessarily imply that all people who travel to these countries intend to stay there definitively or are going there in order to make bombs explode deliberately. In my opinion, the western countries should relativize and stop treating people visiting their territories as if they were guilty of doing something wrong. People are equal and should be allowed, according to my personal vision, to travel wherever they want seeing that they don't pose any threat, make trouble or destabilize the safety of the others.
For the Moroccans, to get the visa for Europe or America, you are expected to prove a lot of things and present many papers and you have sometimes to wait in line for a very long time in order to get the precious document. Sometimes you can stay in front of the consulate or the embassy of one of these countries and spend much more time than the time you are supposed to stay in the country itself. For me as a Moroccan, I consider that this is a pure abuse, and I hope the situation could change one day. But to make things change, we should raise our voice and show our displeasure. To start, in my opinion, we should first make these governments aware of our cause and explain them that Earth belongs to every human being and it's our right to visit every corner of the world. Also, these governments should stop proclaiming to be giving democracy to other countries while they put restrictions on our freedom. They should know that if we retort to them in the same way by closing our borders, the world will be extremely dull and insipid and people will be deprived from all the benefits of travelling and going abroad. So, I thing it's time for these countries to change this mentality of discrimination and treat people equally so they can go wherever they want without any restriction.

  • Some countries do not require a visa in some situations, such as a result of reciprocal treaty arrangements.
