Officials discovered the vandalism Monday afternoon at the West Sacramento Islamic Community Center, but believe it may have happened in the morning. According to a police report, vandals broke into the building through a back door and damaged property, including religious wall hangings and a bookshelf that held Qurans. They also stole property from the mosque.
"Because of the nature of the vandalism, we urge local law enforcement authorities and the FBI to investigate a possible bias motive for this incident," said CAIR-SV Civil Rights Coordinator Adel Syed.
The mosque, which according to its website, is currently being remodeled, is headed by the Sacramento Afghan Community and Religious Center.
