I'm signaling here from a range of 11.1 miles, with my $10 EDC signal mirror from REI. This is an excellent signal mirror - bright, light, compact and easy to aim. You do have to protect it from scratching - it comes with a peeloff, reattachable film to help protect it. This is the 0.32 oz 2"x3" Rescue Flash from American Medical Kits, which costs less than $10 (Now sold as the SOL Rescue Flash Mirror). I have another video on YouTube showing flashes from this mirror at 22 miles. The Rescue Flash is a polycarbonate (Lexan) mirror with a "reflex sight" retroreflective mesh aimer that creates a bright, fuzzy, circular aiming spot, or "fireball", that seems to float in midair in the direction of the reflected column of light. The aiming spot is a virtual image of the sun, visible only when looking through the aimer, and is visible when aiming at the sky. For more on signal mirrors with retroreflective aimers, Google for ""MIL-M-18371E" (the MilSpec for glass signal mirrors with this type of aimer.) REI also sells the excellent 2"x3" Coghlan's glass signal mirror, which is brighter, and more durable, but also heavier (2oz), thicker and a touch more expensive ($12.25). Both mirrors are available from many other outlets.
