Broadcast (1998) Is the Earth unique, and if so, why? Scientists have had to explore the Solar System, searching for clues about our planet's birth. Uniquely amongst the terrestrial planets, the Earth has retained liquid water on its surface for over 4 billion years, despite a steady increase in the Sun's heat output. This water has had a profound influence on the planet's geological activity, as well as being a breeding ground for life. But living organisms may have played a crucial role in ensuring that liquid water exists on Earth, linking the planet's geology and biology tightly together.

Earth is alive, but not just teeming with life; it is a living entity. It moves, deep inside and on the surface. Moreover, scientists have now discovered that the origins of life itself depended on the active geology of our planet. The earth is more than simply our birthplace, it is quite literally the thing that gave us birth. Earth Story unravels the secrets of our planet and brings it alive. The series took three years to make and was filmed all over the world, from the craters of active volcanoes to the ocean floor. Where the cameras could not go, in both time and space, the latest animation techniques take over. Combining live action footage with state of the art computer graphics which enable us to travel back and forwards through time, this is a fantastic journey of scientific discovery and a comprehensive history of life in all its forms on planet Earth.

When and how was the Earth formed? What is the link between earthquakes, volcanoes and the creation of the continents? How do mountains affect our climate? What triggers Ice Ages? This series answer these and many other questions, telling the amazing story of Earth and its constantly changing nature. Two centuries ago scientists began to investigate the history of the Earth by examining the rocks beneath its surface and began to formulate the astonishing concept of geological time. Using this discovery as their starting point, Earth Story unravel the fascinating history of the Earth from its earliest beginnings to the dawn of human civilisation.

Two themes emerge as this compelling story unfolds. Firstly, from its molten core to the outermost reaches of its atmosphere, our planet operates as one vast interlinked system. Aspects of our landscape and climate that seem at first quite distinct such as earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers and monsoons are in fact intimately related to each other. Secondly, the active geology of our world has been vital to the origin of life and the progress of evolution. The authors tackle these ideas, using full colour illustrations, stunning photography and the latest scientific thinking. By describing the remarkable forces that formed and shape our ever changing world, Earth Story gives us a new understanding of the planet and our place within its evolution.

  • i love all the episodes except this. I disliked this since i am not convinced by the evidence that water once existed on mars. it seems to me that these scientists are making up stories to back up the theory. The lightning that once scarred mars is more convincing to me. try to search that one and see for yourself.

  • Fantastic series !

  • Unbelievable Series Thanks

  • thanks for uploading this amazing serial

  • whoa!!! this series has been a journey of my earth(life) time......

  • Very good series thanks very much.

  • heh, so not only do we need to find another planet that's in the habitable zone. We also need to find one with a moon sized planet around it to even out the rotation and regulate it.

Boy did we hit the lotto on planets. But then I guess we would not be here if we didn't.

  • With Venus having too much atmosphere and Mars having too little I always used to dream of opening a portal between them. Then excess atmosphere of one could be bleed off to bolster up the other. Thus make both ready to be terraformed. Now if only we had such portal technology. >.<
