Belgium had a good team in 94' (Michel Preudhomme for example), but again in the last 16 playing Germany, we didn't get a very obvious penalty to level the score 3-3. And in 2002, heatbreaking disallowed goal by Wimots against Brasil, last 16 too ! After that much of the players stopped in national team or ended their career, the team collapsed and the fans deserted. But Wilmots is back as coach and with talented young players who respect him and love the team, it's living more than ever.

Happens to us all at some point. Belgium WERE the better team in that game, it's true.

What's happened to Belgium as a world power, btw? People frequently forget that they were one of the best international sides of the 80s. Was it just a lucky crop of players, or did something change at the systemic level inside Belgium after that?

For my money Romania were the best team of WC94. Such a shame they took their foot off the gas at the wrong moments against Sweden.

The 2002 WC was an absolute joke. It seriously MUST have been bribery that took South Korea to the semis. And as a by-product, one of the worst German teams in living memory made the last two with what must surely be the easiest-ever run to a final: Paraguay, the US and South Korea.

my first memory of football. I was only 5. Remember my dad jumping of the sofa and making a lot of noise.

Watching MOTD and pointed out to my son about this great goal that David Platt scored many years ago.

Well I'm half Nigerian so that made up for England not being there for me! 2002 was pretty disgraceful in the decisions, although I must admit i did laugh at Italy and Spain's expense. Ronaldinho and Seaman was painful too.

Yeah 1994 had a lot going for it, though giant killing isn't everything ( as the 2002 nightmare showed ).

1994 was a great world cup. Nigeria, Bulgaria, Romania all emerging and giant killing. USA beating Colombia.Romania beating Argentina. Nigeria nearly beating Italy. Bulgaria beating Germany. Hagi, Stoichkov etc

    Not at all.

Every world cup from 1994 onwards has been getting steadily worse. ( 2006 bucked the trend a little ). All world cups before it were fantastic.

1990 was indeed defensive, physical ( and dismal Argentina were depressing ) - but the standard was incredibly high, the goals were unbelievable, the clashing of different football cultures and styles was engrossing, the sense of importance and atmosphere overwhelming. In short, it was PROFOUND. Like all World Cups used to be. And now aren't
