Sean Folsom playing historic reproduction bagpipe. May 2009

This Bagpipe was made in 2008, by Pipe Maker Brad Angus, of Vancouver, Washington. It features a reproduction of a Historic Chanter and Chanter Stock, which was informed by a detailed Plan, that was printed in The Northumbrian Piper's Society Journal, Volumes 21/22 (2001). The title of the Article is: "The Origins of the Northumbrian Small Pipes" by Ernst Eugen Schmidt. The plan is printed in Volume 22. This Plan describes 3 Bagpipe parts that were found in in 1994, in an Archaeological Survey of "The Uelvesbuller Koog", a Merchant Ship that was stranded on the coast of Nordfriesland (Amt Nordsee-Treen). The Ship was dated to approx. 1625. The remains of the Chanter's Double Reed, that is, a small metal Staple, was still held in the Chanter's Reed Seat. The Chanter was part of a type of "Indoor" or Soft-sounding Bagpipe, described in Michael Praetorius' "Syntagma Musicum" (1614-1620).
This Chanter could have been part of a Hummelchen with two Drones, or a Dudey with three Drones. I picked the 3 Drone "Dudey"configuration, which is What You See Here. Brad Angus figured out the Drones and the other parts, which he made out of Boxwood that was harvested in his local neighborhood. I made the Bag with Cow-Hide and Rivets. There are many Historic Illustrations of the Dudey which informed us, some reproductions of these Paintings can be found in the book "Sackpfeifen in Schwaben" printed by the Swabian Cultural Archive, Balingen, Germany.

  • @Rainisk The Hummelchen had only two Drones. The Chanter and Chanter stock could have come from a Hummelchen or a Dudey with 3 Drones, in the configuration you see here.

  • What is the diference between this instrument and the Hümmelchen?

  • This should be the dudey of every good American.
