A Cat D10T bulldozer equipped with ASI's Dozer Automation Kit performing ripping operations. In mining, ripping is often used to break up the surface of leach pads to increase the efficiency of the leaching process.

You need to put a ripped into the ground first to break up the ground to make it easier to collect more material in the blade.
