Baikun Li started her academia career as Assistant Professor at Penn State Harrisburg in 2003, and joined the faculty of environmental engineering at the University of Connecticut in 2006. Baikun's expertise is environmental biotechnology, wastewater treatment and bioenergy production. Currently, she is leading five PhD students working on hydrogen production and electricity production from microbial fuel cell treating wastewater. Baikun has collaborated with environmental companies in Connecticut and New York to commercialize the sustainable bioenergy production through wastewater treatment and convert wastewater treatment plants to power generation plants. By working with industry, Baikun has filed for three patents of microbial fuel cells. In the summer of 2009, Baikun's group successfully conducted the first national pilot-scale microbial fuel cell systems in wastewater treatment plant, which is a significant step toward the commercialization of bioenergy production.
