I think they are either too young or both the same sex, but they seem like having spawning time. Their dorsal pinnae got black spots and their caudal pinnae end became black and red. They also have black big spots on their sides.

  • My silver dollars love beef heart ... Why do u say they don't eat meat???

  • @J1SMOKES I never tried to feed them with meat, maybe you have a different fish from Serrasalmidae (piranha family). Or I didn't know, I had them only once, when they grew large I sold them.

  • they look like mini piranhas does they eat meat ?

  • @foroeste1 They are vegetarians, they ate almost all plants I had in the aquarium. Now I have no fishes - only plants without water, just a small greenhouse.

And they are not mini - they grow to 18 cm or even more.

  • @Abrimaal abrimal one more question can a silver dolar eat a baby mouse ??

  • @foroeste1 No, they don't eat meat.

  • I have about 20 neons and other small Characidae, silver dollars are not interested in them. I sold my dollars just a few days ago cos I want to transform my aquarium into a riparium - about 1/4 of water, a few small fishes and plants rooting in water with emerged leaves.

  • hi there, im planning on adding neons to my tank, but do u think my SD's would eat them? atm i also have guppies breeding, and the fry i release into the tank (approx 1-2cm in length) are thriving and they arent being eaten.

  • I know, cos everybody calls them 'silver dollar' not knowing the scientific name. My fishes are 9 cm long, I bought them about 1.5 year ago, they were about 5 cm long. They ate almost all plants in my aquarium except Microsorium, Anubias and 2 Cryptocorynes.

  • You know what? I was confusing Luna with Mola, which is what I have. I'm sorry about that. You may be correct. Although they kind of look like Metynnis argenteus to me. There's so much confusion and contradictory information about silver dollar identification that it becomes difficult to know what you have. Do you have any good links on the Luna you could send me? You might have to PM me.

    How big are yours???
