  • Where do you filmed that ? It looks a bit like a tourist attraction.

  • The name of that place is Edo Wonderland (it is a tourist atraction that sends you back to the Edo period), Kinugawa-onsen train station, nearby Nikko (JAPAN)

  • Oiran were more than just prostitutes to some. The true reason they were paraded like this was because it was believed that just looking upon one in her full regalia would bring good fortune, health and wealth. I think it's beautiful.

  • こんなに美しい女の人があるんですかと言われたのか?

  • As a dancer, I'm LOVING the various walking-styles of the characters in this procession!

  • you have to admit, it looks gorgeous ^^

    though I wouldn't like to be the one in the parade XD goes to slow ^^

  • それはとても美しいです。

  • @HayleeHalogenX Search online for Women Of The Pleasure Quarters by Lesley Downer.

    She lived in Japan for years and did lots of research into the old floating worlds or pleasure quarters. I bought mine at Amazon.

    Another book worth finding is The Nightless City by J.E. De Becker. It was written when the Yoshiwara Yukwaku was still doing business. It's out of print but one of the bookshops on the Amazon site can probably provide a copy. Good luck! :-)

  • Does anyone know where I could find some good resources on Oiran, Tayu, etc. in English? A lot og the ones I've found are in Japanese, and, well, I can't read them ;.;

  • @rivynaussies Yes, it's a pity they speak Japanese in Japan, isn't it? :P All the loudspeaker is saying at the beginning is that the Oiran march is starting and to please watch if you're interested. Then she just talks about the Oiran and the march itself. Basically, nothing you can't read on wikipedia. :)

  • @xShadowxPhoenix erm, this is at an historical themed park. Oiran were apart of Japanese culture 200+ years ago & since the park is set back then, they do things that used to be done- ie the march of the oiran. Oiran were artists and not just prostitutes. Just because there's no real equivalent to this class of people (orian, gisaeng, etc.) in western culture (except perhaps Madame de Pompadour, who could also be called a "gaudy prostitute") doesn't make them any less historically important

  • To be OIRAN, she must be educated. She could make Japanese poem like HAIKU or WAKA poem in a flash. And caligraphy also. OIRAN did not work as only prostitute but also she was as entertainer. When OIRAN accepts the order of her guest, the guest must marry her. But he is impossible to betray her. All guests must have resolution to marry OIRAN. In old time pleasure had also suffering. But only millioner could do that.
