How old are you? Did you visit a school? Is math known in Australia? Do you know what's the difference between a rate and an absolute number???
They took the number of inhabitants and the number of homicides in each country. Then they divided 100,000 by the number of inhabitants and multiplied it with the number of homicides. Then you have the RATE of homicides in a country, the homicide rate. It's just another version of the percentage of homicides of the population. LOL

The homicide rate defines the number of humans killed per 100,000 inhabitants. It's an relative number, the size of the overall population doesn't matter, that's why it is called RATE.
