I'm posting this for the attendee's of the Motion-Connect online session that are wondering why I use Flash instead of After Effects for character animation. Terrific question! Look at the quality of our work.

The goal is to create broadcast quality character animation. We used After Effects for compositing and adding effects, but it's the quality and style of the character animation we are able to achieve using Flash that justifies our reasons for using it. Besides, it is not just the tool, it's the artists knowledge and experience that makes the ultimate difference. There are certain aspects that are easier for us to do in Flash and others that are easier in After Effects. It's all about efficiency, and style for us.

Back in the day when we formed our studio (2003), it really didn't make sense to use AE for character animation. Perhaps that's changing now. The important thing is to understand the principles of quality design, animation, and film making. The tool selection is also important to speed up the creation process which contributes to the overall enjoyment of the project. If I can do it faster and easier, while maintaining the style I'm shooting for in AE, I WILL use it for character animation. I think if that were the case, I would be seeing a whole lot more character work being done in AE.

The best character animation I have seen lately in AE is the work being done in motion comics. Some of it is really good, but it is a far cry from the style of the work you saw in this reel. I am open to any comments or feedback any of you have about this, and look forward to the conversation. Peace!

LA based Six Point Harness studio creates high quality animation for television, film and new media.
