An OTCA metapixel zoom running in Golly. I'm working on taking frames from this and doing a version of Escher's "Print Gallery" like Lenstra did with the original: http://escherdroste.math.leidenuniv.nl/

@whyevernotso below had the excellent suggestion of listening to the Shepard tone auditory illusion while watching, so open this link in a new window, then come back and watch: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/61/DescenteInfinie.ogg

  • Is there a way I can do this myself? Can I download 'life' from somewhere and then use the same initial sets of dots that you have?

  • @evilgeenius2 Sure. Download it from golly. sourceforge. net and use the metapixel script on a single ON pixel; that will give you a metapixel flooded with LWSS's. Copy a few of them to a new file and run the metapixel script on a small rectangle around them.

  • @metawetayt I have the application running but where can I find the metapixel script? I can't see any mention of it when browsing files after using menu item "Run script".

  • @evilgeenius2 It's called metafier.py

  • Can you give some more details when the large scale motion occurs? I am wondering why there is a sudden jump in the large scale.

  • @constantbin I had to halve the size 11 times while doubling the speed 15 times, so I doubled the speed twice at one point, which made it look jumpy. To do this properly, there'd be a smooth zoom in both size and speed, but Golly doesn't have that functionality built in.

  • Wow. Almost stopped my heart.

Is it possible to make one that zooms out gradually instead of in those jerky steps? I think that would finish the job on my heart.

  • Yo dawg...

  • LOL

  • Due to its immense size, the Droszt phenomena of SUPER-oscillators is beyond my ability to explore.

  • @evilgeenius2 of course. Just do "sudo apt-get install golly" :)

  • Awesome!

  • @MrGalaxim Well, I'm no mathematician, and I had just woken up about an hour before posting that, but I guess since they're placed before they start moving, and because they're moving in a loop they probably would just perform the loop backwards.

  • holy crap

  • "what's so cool about this video?" ...and then it zooms out.
