Fast Diesel? VW Touareg TDI @ the Track

Diesels are finally here, sort of. Now that we have the low-sulfur fuel, manufacturers have responded with vehicles that even the great state of California will allow on its hallowed highways.

Trouble is, these vehicles aren't exactly cheap. Case in point: the 2009 Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI. It starts at nearly $43K, which is over $3,000 more than the base V6. And as the numbers below attest, it's not exactly the fastest SUV we've ever tested.

That said, the diesel engine works well in the Touareg, doling out torque right when you need a stiff push in the back. It's quiet, too, and according to the EPA it will return 25 mpg on the highway. See what our road test editor thought about what it can do at the test track after the jump.

You really need to get yourself out of your cave and go drive a modern diesel. There are absolutely no comprimises in a diesel compared to a gasoline powered car or light truck. Try it you'll like it.

I drove a Ford Mondeo when I was in the UK. 6 speed diesel - man i want that much low end torque again! Wish there were more diesels in Canada.

The only decent volkswagen diesel engine is the 1.9tdi! The rest are poo. The 2.0 and 2.5 shite themselves so easy!

Fast diesel...and very unreliable. Silly americans should live and drive in Europe before to talk so well about diesel. Modern diesel are too complicate and very problematic. Ok,VW marketing is very strong and americans are so gudgeons...By the way americans are not interested in fuel efficiently cars, They still buy big,useless and definitely not fuel efficiently big truck. How lame the americans can be?

americans have big cars with big engines and they are so proud of it. but it's not a smart decision to drive a hummer when u r going to work at rush hour.

their engines are also very different. i think if i tell to an american that my car has a 1.6 petrol engine that produces 200hp, it's an 80% chance he won't belive a car like that exists
