January 2010 UPDATE: About 40 people have all written to me and told me that their civic makes the same noise too! My car still makes this noise from time to time. It will do it for a few months and then mysteriously stop. Then a few months later it will come back. I don't know what is causing it, and it doesn't seem to be affecting performance at all. Still it is a mystery! Perhaps it is something inherently wrong with the 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid?

My 2003 Honda Civic Hybrid has had a very bad creak emmit from the steering column while moving the wheel while accelerating from 0-25 mph. It only occurs while accelerating with the gas pedal. Decelerating and moving the wheel produces no noise / creak regardless of speed, and wheel movement at higher speeds does not create a sound. I had a front impact in Dec 2004 so it could be a result of the re-build (it was a moderate hood / radiator damage) but the noise has only gotten bad in the past 6 months. Does it have something to do with the power steering fluid? power steering belt? Example video 2 of 3

  • my 98 civic makes this noise , a month in now and getting louder, sounds like its got dry joints, and also sounds like an old creaking door while driving

  • I believe I find the solution for this.

The steering wheel column(inside the car) needs to be lubed or greased up. Look where the gas & brake pedals are, there should be a black tube-like cover that covers the column. 2 clamp ring hold it..pull them off with your hand & pull the tube cover off & grease the whole column up. Only hard part is putting the cover back on because you have to make sure it doesn't get in contact with the column & start make noises again.

    And there it is!

  • Just took mine in for the same thing tried to show them your video they claimed they did not have any PC' with speakers on them to hear it. Got in my car they i heard it twice they said they could not hear it. I called American Honda to list a case number with them not more help they suggested I go to another dealer. We will see.

  • I have a 2002 Civic Si and it does the exact same thing. I am also having issues with a creaking sound coming from what sounds like all four corners of the car. It sounds as if the struts are bad. I replaced the front struts about two years ago. I also replaced the ball joint on the front driver side about one year ago. I love the car but it is becoming a major pain.

  • i have the exact same noise! did you find out what the problem is?

  • Did you ever find out what the correct fix is?

  • try getting a big ratchet and tightening downthe rack and pinion bolts that go into the firewall. I did this with my honda and the noise stopped. Im guessing the bushings wore a bit and just needed tightening.

  • My car makes the same exact noise.. But only after it rains. in dry weather it goes away. i think i may be a bad balljoint without greese. or my steering rack. mines a 95 civic
