NOTES IN GENERAL

I seem to be always looking down, Well, I am, this song is not in my repertoire so I am reading the lyrics which I have stashed off camera.

NOTES ON THIS SONG

This song is a traditional Australian tune which has crossed over into the Canada and is associated with Newfoundland.

According to Raymond Crooke's YouTube channel:
"It is not really an authentic Australian song as it originally came from the English Music Hall tradition."

See Raymond's performance here ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEAvMp6oq_U ...

another source says:
"Henry Pottinger Stephens and William Yardley. Written for the burlesque comedy, Little Jack Shephard (London, 1885; Melborne, 1886). First published in Australia in the Sydney Golden Songster in 1893 ."
(source ... http://www.wtv-zone.com/phyrst/audio/nfld/05/botany.htm ... )

adding to the note Raymond has on the "music hall tradition"

The version Raymond is singing has differnt lyrics than the collection at GEST Songs of Newfoundland and Labrador (which is where I retrieved the lyrics I am using for this performance)

Cheers.

  • @Heahmount Hey bud, not sure on the exact chords to be honest with ya, I had them written down and they've since landed in an unsorted file a while ago. Having a quick watch of my hands though I'd guess this version is in the key of C. Hopefully that'll help you some, if you ever record a version send me the link!

  • and we'll bow for botany bay

  • @TravisTricky

cheers buddy....keep singing, lets keep the folk history of England alive, and I'll drink that last beer on my desk for you mate

  • I love your rendition so much.....I learnt the words at school in Australia, and I agree totally what you say about the power of folk music....there is something deep inside me that is touched by the tune, and the words....."only us poor convicts know what we go through".....thank you for your brilliant singing of a song that means alot to me
