In 1984, I was able to share in the lives of 50 or so Nicaraguan cooperative farm families caught in the middle of a civil war but looking forward in their challenge to build a new future for themselves and their children. Twenty-four years later, they continue their struggle - older (the children in the pictures now adults, some of the older ones gone)in the midst of what in many ways is still the same, in many others very different. I recently came across the black and white negatives of the time I shared with them and offer them up as a little bit of history and a thank you to the way they made me (and continue to do so) a part of their family.
I wish I had lived during these times, not because I wanted to suffer obviously but because then I would be able to speak properly about the issue; unfortunately I was born not until 1989 when we were just returning from the exile in Honduras... I love and hate this part of history anyway. thanks for the video!

Thanks Wilmer,
In reality, I understand the frustration of many Nicaraguans at having to live through that difficult period, as well as the challenge that many Nicaraguans have to put this part of history into perspective. My observation on the struggle and dreams of the people I lived with is not meant to glorify what was (and continues to be) a difficult situation - it's only an attempt to give thanks to and recognize that open and valiant spirt of the Nicaraguan people.
