Television adaptation of Stephen King novel that follows a recovering alcoholic professor. He ends up taking a job as a winter caretaker for a remote Colorado hotel, which he seeks as an opportunity to finish a piece of work. With his wife and son with him, the caretaker settles in, only to see visions of the hotel's long deceased employees and guests. With evil intentions, they manipulate him into his dark side which takes a toll on he and his family.

  • @NachoMachoLibre I agree with you. Stephen King said in an interview, back when this version came out in the mid 90's, that he wasn't satisfied with the version with Jack Nicholson in it. This version is extremely close to the book, which is what he wanted. I think this version is much, much better--it's one of my favorite movies, actually. I read the book, and I think the only difference is how it ended, but it wasn't that big of a deal. The ending here is cool, too.

  • @rocksoliddude1 Thats the problem with it! It's supposed to be an eerie supernatural horror film, (the way the author intended it to be) not a mans descent into murderous madness. Jack was a victim of the hotel just as much or maybe even more than his family was. That is what makes the book so disturbing.

  • if you read the book, the 1980 version is a terrible adaption compared to this

  • the nicholson film is a psychological film that is difficult to get under the skin of, it's an atmospheric masterpiece with great acting and scary underlying meanings. everything is this film is presented to the audience in a silly, plastic and corny way.
