Serving Taxi Drivers: NYTWA's 2010 Health Fairs

Fifty percent of taxi drivers are uninsured - double the rate of fellow New Yorkers. One out of four have never had a medical check-up; 78% report lower back pain and half report pain in knees, shoulder, neck and heel of the foot; and 33% report being assaulted on the job. While we campaign for an industry sponsored Health & Benefits Fund and protection on the job, NYTWA provides comprehensive check-ups and individual counseling for drivers through regular health fairs. Over 10,000 screenings and health insurance enrollment since 2001. This is the story of how we serve the taxi workers who serve the world.
