  • what kind of paper is the best paper for pastel painting?

and what brand of pastel are you using?

  • I like to use a sanded surface for all subjects except portraits - I use Canson or Fabriano for them. The US has some wonderful surfaces - Kitty Wallis paper and Ampersand PastelBord are great.

I use a variety of brands. All are soft pastels - e.g. (in no particular order) Unison, Rembrandt, Sennelier, Schminke, Lukas, Terry Ludwig, Great American Artworks.

    Regards

    Lyn

  • You use Unison? Do you mind if I ask why? At 4$ a stick, I'k keenly curious as to what could possibly make them worth the cost. Are they really that much better than Rembrandt or Sennelier?

  • I choose a colour rather than a brand and here in Australia Unison has been much more readily available than Sennelier. However since doing this demo I have discovered the joys of shopping for art supplies on line.

  • kool landscape! what type of paper did you use? also can you use pastel on canvas?

  • I used Art Spectrum COlorfix paper. And yes, you can pastel on canvas - if you prime it with something like marble dust & gesso.

You could also try Ampersand Pastelbord - it may be easier to get in the UK than Australia where I have to import it from Dick Blick's

  • Dom,

You can buy Schminke 'Pastel Primer', ready mixed for priming any painting support. But you could indeed use gesso, or acrylic primer mixed with marble dust.
