A therapeutic method known as Patterning is available through the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential .

In this therapy, the child lies on a table while others move his/her arms and legs in a way that is said to stimulate brain activity. It uses, among other techniques, passive and repetitive movement to teach correct motor patterns.

In this video, Hulet Smith (Occupational Therapist/far left) and Megan Smith (Physical Therapist/middle) use the method on their daughter, Sophia, who has Cerebral Palsy.

The couple attended sessions at the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential which instructs on the proper way to perform this type of therapy.
This video clip is for educational purposes only.
Patterning should always be done under the supervision of a professional who has had proper training.

  • @oneshotveth contact my lecturer, Professor Chris Oliver.

  • @steadyhandsunny Could you please cite your references....

  • I cannot believe people still do this! The Institute for Achievement of Human Potential and it's methods were proven so ineffective and unethical almost 50 years ago now.

  • This helps the child because it patterns the brain and teaches it the movements of crawling that develop naturally when a baby is placed on it's belly. You are teaching the brain how it feels to be in a crawling motion, and eventually it will develop the skills on its own and the child (or adult as it is in my brothers case ^^) will eventually be able to crawl on their own. It DOES help, I watch it every day in my own home.

  • Thank you for this video. We have gone to the Institutes and are patterning my 2.5 year old - but it is hard for people who have not seen it done to get it down right. I plan to show my nurse and helper tomorrow. :-) Thank you!

  • and how does this help the kid?

  • do you do this therapy for CP only, how about kids with childhood arthritis?
