Kilmore is Australia's oldest inland town, having been first settled in 1837. It was a stronghold of early Celtic settlers from Ireland, Scotland and Cornwall, and remains a strong Celtic area to this day. Many of Kilmore's oldest extant buildings are made of bluestone including the hospital, old court house, former post office, some churches, a gaol, and a monument to Hume and Hovell near the golf course. Those buildings and its natural surrounds attract great interest from passing tourists...
However Kilmore is under threat. Over 1100 trucks per day also have a passing intrerest in the town, and currently use it as a thoroughfare between central Victoria and Melbourne. In the coming year, the number of trucks is set to double
.
The residents of Kilmore have pleaded with the State Government to do something about the problem and build a suitable bypass. Instead John Brumby's government and local member Ben Hardman MP have promised a duplication. A duplication of the same problem through and around Kilmore. The various proposals for that duplication will endager the very cultural and natural heritage that Kilmore residents are desperate to protect.
It is unacceptable... please help! The people of Kilmore need your support.
