Yeah, I saw that movie 18 times in GDR-cinema.
It is because Harry Belafonte was a great singer for peace and harmony here in eastern Germany and around the world. He produced that movie. That's the reason why you could see that movie in GDR cinemas. ;)

The film was shown the UK in 1983 but was not generally on the circuit. The bigger film here was 'Breakdance The Movie.' But 'Beat Street Breakdown' was a all round more edgy film. The soundtrack LP was release in the UK on Sugarhill Records if I remember right and the 12" mix of 'Beat Street' was superb but barely made the charts. Us DJs at the time were playing all this stuff to large audiences in the days when Jazz Funk and Soul was going too commercial.
