How hard was it to convert it to the kickstarter? I just bought an Ft 500 that needs a starter. Apparently this a weakness of the Ft 500

hard... mods include finding the complete kickstart mechanism from an '79 XL500S, modify an internal engine bracket to fit the FT engine, get an XL clutch cover, machine the valve cover to accept the decompression mechanism
a tricky bit is to get inside the FT engine through its under belly, this way you don't have to split the cases to fit the internal bits.

i put an rs250 kickstart shaft in one of my ft motors. what carb have you got on the rs?

i have the original FT500 carb on the FT500 engine block (was a bitch to fit in, the engine block of the FT500 has a longer stroke, so the cylinder head is higher up in the frame)

you are totally wright, unfortunatly I already found out why... snapped the kickstart shaft right off.
i am in the process of mounting a decompression system now, but that's a lot more work than placing the kickstarter
