well Spawn was the number book for yrs. Storm, Bishop, Blade he had a movie. Obama Is the biggest selling super hero yet.

It's like deemar said, trying to make a good black character doesn't work. Trying to make a good character who is black, that's what I like. Also maybe I'm too picky because when it comes to character types, I like varying degrees of 'boy meets world' types. Humorously light character learning and reacting to the world and that evolution.

What makes a good black super hero? I can't really say. My favorite currently is classic milestone static, DMZ of oh crap I'm blanking on the name but it was a super team. He fought superman a bit during the crossover than killed Milestone.
I also like Luke Cage currently (not when he was teamed up with BP, he seemed to stereotypical then) and when he was mad at Stark.
The heroes I like don't 'act' black per se. They are just characters that are presented in an interesting indentifiable way

I completely agree and that is an extremely valid point, but as I said it ain't like Jack & Stan had a first hand encounter (Real relationships) with their subject matter when it came to blacks let alone a actual African and if they did you couldn't tell from their work.

the two old white guys who created the black Panther were jews who had to change their names from Stanley Lieber and Jacob Kurtzburg so they could get on in the comics world and they were never able to promote one of their many heroes as being openly jewish.
It was only in a recent Karl Kesel issue that the Thing said he was jewish which I think was a nice nod to Jack Kirby since he identified with that character.
Discrimination can affect not just race but religion and nationality too.

yeah but millar is a bit of a moron.
The Falcon has been treated well in the hands of some writers especially Steve Englehart (who is one of the most under-rated writers in comics history)

Well at least you have a breakfast cereal, locus!
Ba-dum-bump!

Sure..but ya got a million, trillion white heroes in general of varied quality. I'm stuck with characters created in the 60s/70s by old white dudes who've probaly never even had a real conversation with a black person.
I doubt Stan Lee was chillin' in Harlem with the brothas to get a sense of perspective, he most likely went to go see Shaft and Dolemite and that molded his version of black superheroes.

Agree just write good characters at the end of the day we all human so writing a black, asian, indian etc..character comes down to the humanity or lack thereof the writer puts into it.
I think any good writer researches their subject so it would be good if the writer had black friends to bounce stuff off of, know your subject and the nuance between different cultures and peoples.
Even in the comic, they made a joke of how uncle tom falcon was. I forget if it was ultimate or 616 though. I guess ultimate, because millar would make a joke like that.
dee hit the nail on the head, though. Stop trying to make black heroes for black people and just make it good. I like spider man, funny how he isn't black. There is a thing called universal appeal and often quality breeds it.

Hm. You guys have an interesting conversation going here about black characters. Help me understand this: what makes an effective 'black' character, as opposed to say, a character who is black but acts like a white guy.
I know I just stepped in it there, but hey, you guys can educate me.
Thanks!

Actually, deemar, Elliot is the one who said things instead of thangs. He's the one on the right. All us Hispanics do look the same though so I don't blame ya for mixing us up. Also, X-Factor is one of my favorite books so I hear you on that.
