A video collage of my recent trip to Viva Wyndham Maya. The video doesn't do justice to the resort, since I did not film the spectacular evening shows as well as some of the food they served. Overall, the hotel was more than satisfactory for a 4-star hotel, with a few disappointments. First, they did not serve a good selection of seafood, with the exception of some sort of grilled white fish fillet. We missed our reservation at the Mediterranean restaurant and maybe they served seafood there. Second, some of the cocktails (e.g. mojito and caipirinha) tasted awful and were done improperly. Powder juice they served out of juice dispensers was equally unpleasant to taste in addition to the lack of any sort of real juice (e.g. no real orange juice in the morning). Third, the disco was rather dull, with mostly the same repertoire, consisting of Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Sean Paul, etc. every single day. If you want to party, you'd be better off heading out to one of the night clubs in Playa del Carmen ($5 / 5 minute taxi ride from hotel). In the end, I don't think I'll be going back to this hotel. RIU, Iberostar and Princess would be my alternative picks.
Music:
Tomtempl feat. Pat Appleton - Fly To Sunshine (Original Mix)
Gazzara - Spirit of Summer
the song is magnificent! <3

The video you took is a very good almost profecional promocion for the hotel. As you said, it's a 4-star house and it was much cheeper than all the others in that category.

@DavidMichael33 One hotel that caught my eye though is Royal Hideaway Playacar, right next to RIU Playacar. Not too much shade on the beach, but their terrace on the beach was nice. It's most likely more expensive than RIU or Iberostar, but it looked nice from the distance. One night they were hosting some kind of a party on the beach with live music, champagne and folks in evening dresses. Looked really classy.

@DavidMichael33 Not during my stay in May 2010, but I remember seeing a wedding when I was in Dominican Republic with my parents in 2007. We stayed at Iberostar Dominicus. As to your previous comment, not sure what you mean by RIU Azteca. There's RIU Tequila, RIU Playacar, RIU Tequila and RIU Palace--the newly renovated hotel. I haven't had a chance to check it out, but it's amazing from the photos and reviews that I've read. RIU Yucatan is a nice hotel too. the food was great at RIU Yucatan.

@andrewarchy I heard that from someone else about not being able to eat at Azteca. Did you see any weddings on your stay?

@DavidMichael33 Viva Wyndham Azteca is where my friends stayed at. I've been to their hotel and it wasn't much different from ours. Funny thing is, I couldn't eat at their hotel (Viva Wyndham Azteca), while they could eat at Viva Wyndham Maya just fine. Stupid rules. Viva Wyndham Maya has a better beach in a sense that we had plenty of palapas and shade, while their beach at Azteca had fewer and taller palapas. Viva Wyndham Maya was definitely better than Azteca.

@DavidMichael33 Hello David. If you can afford it, I'd recommend RIU Palace or RIU Azteca instead. VWM is a nice hotel, but having been to RIU, I thought RIU had better food, beach, etc. In the end, they all kind of look the same, but little nuances matter if you have something to compare them to. Iberostar is also another great chain to consider. My family was very pleased with service, food, beach, etc. at Iberostar after my dad and I first checked it out, while staying at RIU Tequila in 2006.
