Let me explain. At the start of the fight he'll cast a death sentence on one of your companions. The clock will then start moving, and if it makes a full circle, that character is knocked out for good. After anothe circle, he'll repeat with your other companion, then another circle then THAT character is out. It'll make another circle, and then he'll cast the death sentence on YOU. If it makes one more circle after that, you're screwed. So it is important to cast stop on the clock to stop this.

@shadowfreak1101 I'd say the way he did it is perfectly what I had in mind as well. You can use Firaga/Blizzaga quickly going into the magic menu and since Thundaga is the furthest down you really should make that the third shortcut.
