"Both Sides Now" was written in 1967 and recorded by the songwriter herself, Joni Mitchell, in her first album "Clouds" which was released in 1969. However, in 1968, it was Judy Collins who made the first commercially released recording of this song and became Collins' signature song. It reached #8 on the U.S. pop singles charts and #3 on Billboard's Easy Listening. It won a 1968 Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance.
My favorite older artist, Nana Mouskouri (who's also one of my parents' very favorite artists), recorded this song in 1969 in French. The French title for this song is "Je N'ai Rien Appris"--or "I've Learned Nothing"--to loosely translate it. To me, I could say I've learned nothing or I've learned so many things about life and love. It's all an illusion or is it not? Whatever it might be, it's up to me to choose and try to make the best of it. Happy or sad? I choose to be happy. Forgive or take revenge? I choose to forgive. Why? Life will lose its meaning if I can't learn to forgive and to be happy with what I have. Also, I don't think anyone can ever be truly happy if he/she doesn't know how to forgive and let go of what's not meant to be.
"But something's lost... but something's gained in living every day..." Isn't that so true? I may have lost a little faith in believing people can always change for the better, but never have I lost faith in my true AMP friends. The friendships I've gained from all of you is really worth my journey in life.
"Both Sides Now" has always been one of my all-time favorite classic songs. I made this music clip as a special dedication to all my AMP (Art, Music, & Poetry) friends across the globe. You know who you are and you know I cherish your friendship.
Thank you for being there for me when dark clouds were covering my sky. This song is for you, my dear AMP friends.
