Handel wrote Partenope in 1730, a time in his life when he was free to choose a wider range of librettos.

"It was Handel's first comic opera, which broke away from the Opera Seria tradition. It was rejected by the Royal Academy of Music, because of its frivolous nature, with relatively few extended arias and more recitative." - Wikipedia.

PARTENOPE
Un cor infedele
si deve punir.

ARSACE
(Che pena crudele!
Mi sento morir!)

ROSMIRA
Un anima ingrata
si deve sprezzar.

ARSACE
(Sei troppo spietata,
potessi parlar!)

PARTENOPE e ROSMIRA
Amante incostante
nel regno d'amore
che pensi di far?

ARSACE
(Che fiero dolore
tacere e penar!)

Translation:

PARTHENOPE
Avenging justice should pursue
the heart whose love was never true.

ARSACES
(Ah! how I faint with cruel pains!
Death shivers in my frozen veins.)

ROSMIRA
The guilt of an ungrateful breast
each mortal should with scorn detest.

ARSACES
(Your cruelty is too severe;
ah, could I utter what I bear!)

PARTENOPE and ROSMIRA
What has the heart, inclin'd to rove,
to hope for in the realms of love?

ARSACES
(What tortures do that bosom fill
that suffers, and is silent still?)

  • : / prefiero la version de leonardo Vinci

  • it's horrible to sing when you have a cold... the phlegm sticks to your vocal cords!!!! thank god he wasn't coughing every two three notes ;-)

  • I love Andreas performances

  • And by 'defence' I mean 'defense', naturally.

  • In his 'defence', aside from still sporting a cold when this was recorded, he does this particular bit lying down.

  • I went yesterday and it seems that Andreas Scholl is finally getting over his cold - he was notably 'raw' on the radio a week ago (the audio heard here), but gave his performance much more last night. Now, we just need Tuva to get well, so that the DVD can capture all six singers at their best. It really is an awesome show.

  • I never heard this before. Quite a dynamic piece! I enjoyed it alot.
