On the 26th September 2005 the Coal River Working Party drilled into the early convict coal mines of Newcastle Australia. This is the birthplace of the Australian Coal Mining Industry. Video by Bob Cook. For more info:

  • I`ve drilled into a 120year old mine tunnel in rankin park. Under someones house causing subsidence. Lowered a camera down and saw a cavity 10m below surface...f`ing cool

  • @chrisheffron they didnt do it for they coal. they were searching for historic mines

  • scince the steel smelters have been shut down its seen the price of refined steel go up significantly, a bloody pain in the ass

  • here comes some coal, fire up the smelter!

  • Reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Mr. Burns launches his "Slant Drilling Co." (I'm sure they won't getting to the oil before the local public school though here!)

  • i do this for a living any idea why they had to drill at angle and not vertical

  • Very interesting. Newcastle is full of geological history
