This is Cracker an education bird from Audubon Center For Birds Of Prey In Florida. Cracker was found as a fledgling with what appeared to be a wing injury. Examination revealed that the bird had no wing bones on one side, some feathers grew, but no bones, mostly likely the bird was malformed already when it hatched.

Since this caracara could not survive if released in the wild, it is an education bird. Cracker would talk to everyone but me. I was trying to get sound for blog readers, but he wouldn't chatter...that is until Steve Moore, the host of Bird Watch Radio came over, Cracker loved him.

  • Wow. You need to study up on bird behavior. From what I saw, those two birds could care less about the "loud upsetting room". Not only was the caracara preening, but the great horned in the background had a nice big feather rouse....two certain signs of contentment. Frightened or stressed birds don't behave like these two.

  • Hurrah for BirkChick! Cracker is so gorgeous! How bizarre that's he's missing wing bones, he's lucky someone found him.
