It's not intensity, its the focus which is on the meaningless & benign; NYC mosques, Tea Parties, & who said what. That our economy is in the dumps, the banks are still a ticking time bomb, etc are touched on, AT BEST, as platitudes & sound bites. There is no meaningful discussion of how best to approach any of the important issues that actually effect our lives..... thats too much cerebrum not enough limbic stimulation (eg anger, fear, self assurance). Limbic excitement gets the ratings

There is WAY too much handwringing over our obsession with Politics now, and whether we are too polarized.
Any study of our actual history would show that NOW is probably the most civil it has ever been. 1860, that was polarized. Almost one million Americans lost their lives in that war. Late 1800s with the anarchist bombings, pretty polarized. 1960s with fire bombings and riots, much more polarized. We need to get a grip.
