Federal agents and postal inspectors are going on the offensive, warning residents about an old scam that continues to claim new victims.
"Thousands of us are approached every day online, over the phone, or via mail, to conduct business transactions sight unseen," said Russ Jacobson, who is the Shawnee-Mission, Kan., postmaster.
KMBC's Jim Flink reported that authorities expressed frustration at the expanding nature of the crimes.
"These violators of the law, these scammers, are targeting you and I and they are using the mail to send fake checks," said Tom Noise, of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
Flink reported that many of the checks originate overseas. Inspectors said they just finished cracking down on one operation in Africa.
"They had a face value of $2.1 billion. The frustrating thing is they were all destined for the United States," Noise said.
