MaximsNewsNetwork: BANGLADESH 20 MILLION VACCINATINS AGAINST MEASLES & POLIO (UNICEF)

MaximsNewsNetwork: 10 March 2010 - UNICEF: Bangladesh - In northern Bangladesh some 20 million children under the age of five are being vaccinated against measles in a two-week campaign supported by UNICEF and 22 million are also being vaccinated against polio.

Following a massive publicity campaign, parents have become aware of the importance to "Immunize Every Child" and they travel by bicycle, rickshaw van, or simply walk for many hours through fields to ensure their children get protection from these preventable diseases.

Many of the parents in the remote and poor district of Panchagarh where the adults are forced out of necessity to crush rocks to make a living have chosen to sacrifice a day's wages to vaccinate their children.

These children are among the 20 million under the age of five who have been vaccinated against measles during the UNICEF supported campaign, 22 million children were also vaccinated against polio.

Loudspeaker announcements and visits by community health promoters have proven effective in communicating the importance of this campaign to a population that is nearly half illiterate.

They announced the vaccination on the loudspeaker. My mother-in-law took my two children to get the vaccination today. I have so much work to do so I was not able to go.
