Video of a MiniMover 5 robot arm controlled by a Nintendo Wiimote. The arm and control algorithm was our semester project in an Electromechanical design class in the University of Michigan's Mechanical Engineering department.

The MiniMover 5 is an educational robot from the early 1980s (this particular one last saw action in 1987). For this project we replaced the stepper motors with hobby servos, which are controlled through the USB to serial adapter. The laptop is running Kubuntu Edgy and the entire program was written in Python.

  • how do you hacked the wiimote? it sends infrared data? can you give me some info? thanks

  • The Wiimote reads infrared data through a small, filtered camera in front, but all Wii-interaction is done through Bluetooth. wiili dot org is a great resource, and has some really helpful coding examples including a basic Python script which was used as a basis for our entire program.

  • hey how do I learn how to do all of these stuff? where do I start after I've learned electronics? I know c++ is that enough? just where do I start to make things like these. please tell me where its my dream! thanks!

  • @ karat007

The program controlling this program was written in Python, but Object-Oriented C++ is a good start. I'm still learning myself, but my best advice is to conceive a project and learn whatever it takes to get it done. If it's something you're interested in, you'll carry it out to the end and the cumulative experience you gain in the process will be a great launching point for the next one. Start small and set realistic intermediate goals. Remember, Google is your best friend.

  • Impressive, if a little slow. I'd like to see a demo of you actually doing something with it. picking something up, breaking something, drawing a picture, Just to show that it's a useful thing to do.

  • wow this was writ in python i been learning c++, python and java my self but python is more suited for animation as it works well with C++ the robotic arm was amazing.

  • cool :D

  • indeed it must have, since you are very good at programming your self?

  • i guess u do better, suc*er

  • wow!! amazing! must ave taakin a while to make.

  • lol "infrared white and blue"
