Plus, there's so much overzealous safety stuff thanks to well meaning Generation X parents who don't remember that back in the day we did dangerous stuff all the time and came out okay. For the 1972-1992 born generation, it's kind of weird, we were the first to have electronic toys (like remote controlled race cars, educational toys, Oregon Trail in grade school) but still had a traditional childhood for the most part. But it's not too late, we can still encourage our own kids' imaginations.

Nowadays imagination is discouraged sadly. I remember this commercial last Christmas with a kid using a toy reindeer as a "monster" to attack a village, the intended message was "buy him new toys", the real message I got was "this proves that kids don't need toys for every situation when an imagination can do the trick". I guess gone are the days of the cardboard box of adventure.
