lol That's actually a huge blob of sandalwood paste... if you look carefully you can see that a little bit of the paste gets pulled off onto the stick, and it's used as an adhesive to hold the scented powder on the stick.
A new study on chinese who use incense a lot is said to show it raises cancer risks, but like much modern "science" there are too many variables, including the type of incense used, the resin or base used in/with it, & perhaps other health-risk factors common in the lives of many in Southern China who use incense. The variables could be as different as taking in burnt redmeat or antioxidant vitamins, & is another case of too many media-seekers publishing results from bad science these days.
